Metal Spinning and Metal Spinners

Article by Adrian Gillam

Writing an article on metal spinning is something I never would have thought of my self doing. Metal spinning you ask? That’s what I first thought when I was first applying for the job that I am currently still doing to this day.”Metal Spinning” its an art to be able to shape, form, spin, mould press even push as some people think we do, to the metal is pretty amazing.Lately there has been a need for popcorn bowls the ones that have their cart with that wagon wheel even a horse. If popcorn is made properly in these bowls it tastes amazing. Kind of like a party in your mouth and only popcorn is invited. These bowls are 800mm diameter x 400mm deep, we tend to make these out of 2.5mm thick stainless steel. To get the job started we need to order a sheet of 8′ x 4′ x 2.5mm 316 or 304 stainless steel, the job requires half a sheet to do one bowl. Once the metal has arrived it goes straight into the cutting factory, then to be guillotined, drilled, then cut into a circle on heavy gauge (thickness) and big diameter’s we tend to run either a ¼” or ½” centre hole, mainly for safety reasons but also to help locate the spinning onto the mould / tool, as there is many operations involved in the manufacturing of this particular bowl. Preparation of the edge after circle cutting is a must as if it is not done you will end up having a bad day and costly. Now to start spinning onto the mould / tool this is the shape, that we have machined from a slug of steel into the hemisphere it is now. We can form /spin the stainless steel a certain distance as stainless work hardens, meaning you cannot spin it anymore without seriously wrecking the lathe and the spinning. The spinning is then couriered to the heat treatment specialist where it is placed in an oven and vacuum annealed at around 1100degress. The spinning is then couriered back to us nice and soft, a bit like the Brisbane Lions at the moment, then we begin the spinning process again. With the popcorn bowl / hemisphere shape being quite deep the bowl will require 2 – 3 anneals. Once the bowl is all nice and round and sized to the right dimensions we give the bowl a #4 finish (brushed), then we weld up the centre hole then the bowl is ready and waiting for some popcorn. Being the experts here at Whitehorse Industries we specialize in stainless steel spinning, we take great pride and pleasure into our products. Feel free to Visit our web site, email, fax or call us.

Beginner's Guide to Mountmellick Embroidery

The embroidery is traditionally worked on close-woven cotton with cotton thread and it has a great elegance. Flowing floral patterns intertwine with stems and leaves, the smooth satin stitches contrasting wonderfully with the padded, knotted stitchery and untextured background. These natural designs are often fairly large and the sculptured patterns have an appealing bold quality, which is enhanced by the absence of color and the addition of knitted fringed fringes. Article by Anne

Do you know what is the most important factor to consider when making a card? Have you ever wondered why almost everything went wrong and awful when you tried making card for the first time? And that, even though you already spent all of your time and effort in working on that card making project, it still turned out to be not at all pleasing or beautiful? It pales in comparison with the work of your other classmates who seemingly did not exert as much effort as you do.

What went wrong?

There are many kinds of paper available in the market these days. If you are a beginner, one of the best things that you should do first is to familiarize yourself with all the kinds of paper. This is important so that you would be open to every possibility that comes with making your personalized greeting card. Here’s a quick rundown of the kind of papers that are more often used for your card making project.

First off, the Cardstock is considered as the most popular of all papers available in the market. This is the same paper that they used for cards that are commercially sold in our neighborhood bookstores. Cardstock papers come in different textures and colors to suit your concept design. Some cardstock papers are already pre-cut especially for your card making projects.

We also have the Origami kind of paper. This is the favorite paper of the paper crafts people because they normally come in a square shape, in different colors and patterns. This kind of paper is made for folding making it exceptionally thicker than your usual paper. If you are looking for a sturdy paper, then the origami paper is your best bet.

And finally, we have the mulberry papers for a more handmade and personalize feel. This kind of paper is known for this distinct texture and feel. Mulberry paper varies in thickness so you could buy the kind of mulberry paper that is perfect for the card making idea that you have in mind.
